One of the first questions that we you can pull back at the time we decide to get our first tattoo is if it hurts to get a tattoo.

The answer depends on many factors, and some very subjective, but we will try to answer it in this article.

The science behind pain

Did you know that in fact the ink of tattoos does not lie in the skin tissue, but in some cells called macrophages? Indeed, these cells, to which they notice the pain of a tattoo, approach the area in which the needle is acting (which moves at more than a thousand punctures per minute) and are the ones that retain the ink.

But as interesting as the function of macrophages is this does not explain why it hurts us so much when we get a tattoo. The reason is quite logical: unfortunately, the area where the ink has to be inserted has to be deep enough to hold the test of time and shallow enough for the ink to look. And right in that area is where the pain receptors are, which when perceiving the attack send signals to the brain, which becomes a rather painful experience.

Pain depending on the place and the person

As you can imagine, if it hurts to get a tattoo on certain areas of the body compared to others too depends on other factors. For example, places where the needle is closest to the bone and the skin is thinner (such as feet or ribs) tend to be more painful and uncomfortable.

Likewise, whether the pain is unbearable or a small discomfort also depends a lot on the person. Some people endure pain much better than others, and although it is not clear why, some studies suggest that it could be related to genetics.
